Newsletter #6 Lots to celebrate!

by | Nov 21, 2017 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Happy fall to everyone! We have seen a burst of rain, but we are still blessed with gorgeous fall colours.
We have a lot of information to share, so make a cup of tea and sit down to read all about the great news that has been happening at GVGS and Mary Lake.

First off, the Board recently passed a motion to change the name of the park. It is now called the Mary Lake Nature Sanctuary. We chose this name after much discussion, and as a result, of learning more about the significant ecological role this property plays in the region. This new moniker clearly articulates what we envision for the property:

  • To honour the previous 70 years of conservation focused ownership
  • Maintain habitat for wildlife species at risk of disappearing (see the preliminary survey results from biologists Kristiina Ovaska and Christian Engelstoft)
  • Offer opportunity for people of the Greater Victoria region a space of refuge and beauty in nature.

Highlands Nature House

At the same meeting, the Board renamed the spacious house that sits as a sentinel on the edge of Mary lake. Its new name is Highlands Nature House. Many groups aligned with the vision have expressed an interest in hosting workshops, classes and retreats at the property. Read more….

Mary Lake residence transitions to the Highlands Nature House.

Several changes have started the evolution of the former Mary Lake residence into an exciting Highlands Nature House. The wall separating off the sun room has been removed to enlarge the assembly room and give it an unrestricted view of the lake. The dowdy wallpaper has been replaced with clean, white walls. New laminate flooring has replaced the impractical carpeting. The Highlands Nature House is on its way to becoming a “must visit” space for learning, retreats and social events.

An inspiring Highlands Nature House will create a sustainable income for the Nature Sanctuary project.
We encourage you to come to the AGM and see for yourself the amazing renovations and future opportunities.

We wish to thank our awesome volunteers and the following businesses
